Nice reviews. I can see some real insight here for those who aren't experienced in creating a rap (like us). The only oversight I saw was the lack of love for the Shadow entries. Other than that, great job.

Sorry, Ross! I had a difficult time thinking of recommendations for you, for the same reason I had a tough time thinking up ones for Pat & Gweebol - your voice is pretty fully-formed already. For you I'd recommend Atmosphere (whom I've already recommended twice in this review set, whoops), K'Naan, and Sage Francis. Have fun!

Wow! Thanks for the compliments! Well done reviews, i especially liked your recommendations section, even though you didn't give me any :-)

Although you may think I haven't rapped. I did do some rapping on \Fresh Dog\ and wrote all therap content for \Silver Tongue\ as well as doing some rapping as entertainment at the summer camp I work at.

My wife and I met working in a camp environment, got married at a summer camp etc. Although this is not a particular story, she liked the song and just wanted to be sure it wasn't about someone else.

Thanks for the kind words, Jon... both Will and I are overwhelmed. Especially coming from someone who entered what I think is a primo entry, given the additional topic restriction you had placed upon you.

We thought it would be a bit of a risk to do socially relevant rap, since we were pretty sure everyone else would be doing party rap or nerdcore, and we might come across as stuffy or boring by comparison. We were also going for a slower old-school style, and weren't sure how that would fly.

I'm certainly not going to start off with the intention of rapping again anytime soon, but I think I might try it if faced with lyrics I can't get to work as melody. F'rinstance, I don't thing I could successfully put this to a tune.

BTW, the book is \How to Rap, The Art and Science of the Hip-Hop MC\ by Paul Edwards. The tips on charting flow were extremely helpful, though most of the rest of the book reads as if it's written for someone with ADHD.

SUPER interesting that you hear TickiTock as the girl's name. To us, it was a turn of phrase -- the guy being kind of an asshole, waving it in her face that he thinks she's wasting the seconds of her life with Tad. Oops, there I go again with the profanity. ;) But I see now how a listener could hear it as her name.

Thanks for doing reviews! I really liked your rap, and from your performance I was not surprised to read that you've rapped before.

Also, I gotta say that Matt & Donna had the catchiest hook of all the submissions.

Great reviews, and I said the same thing about Donna the other night in ArtiFiction. Loved the track, but it did seem as though she was concentrating on the difficult lyrics. Really though, you can't blame her considering the short time frame & the lyrical choices.

Haha.. re: pretentious title, yeah, I wasn't sure about it. I couldn't think of anything else, and it seemed to be relevant enough (ie. it wasn't a Fallout Boy/Panic! title that didn't actually have anything whatsoever to do with the song).

There actually is a higher register guitar riff during the chorus that you may or may not be able to hear with headphones. I had production difficulties and couldn't get it loud enough without being shrill and/or burying the vocals.

Glad you enjoyed it.

I get told that my songs sound like Weird Al all the time, and I think it's mostly just because I try to be funny. It is unlikely I'll ever be on that level.

As for the instruments, everything I use is synthetic. In my opinion, the weird drums that NIN uses so often sound really stupid, so I'm not too concerned with my version of them sounding "fake". And the guitar I wanted to use wasn't functioning with the rest of the music. I find that the further I stray from instruments that "sound real", i.e. the obvious cybernetic/sci-fi synths, the harder it is to have "real-sounding" synths blend with them.

Besides, if anyone can take one of my songs and improve the presentation, I say go for it. I do all this on my computer, so there's not going to be any "ITC Live and In Concert" albums any time soon.
